There’s a delicate balance between the intertwining worlds of artistry, entertainment and humor, but for dance-derived alternative rockers Family Force 5, it’s an ecstatic equilibrium that remarkably illustrates all three elements. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, the Atlanta-based five-some are just as likely to get the party started as they are to escort audiences into an alternate reality. Even so, the band never compromises album creativity, while simultaneously hearkening back to the days of massive spectacles on tour.

The group’s sophomore release, Dance Or Die, oozes with over-the-top illustrations, charging out of the gate with funky rhythms, percolating club grooves, undeniably infectious hooks and instantaneous sing-a-longs. Imagine an inventive evolution of the band’s eye-opening debut, Business Up Front, Party in the Back, blended with Prince getting down at a Daft Punk concert where Michael Jackson busts out the moonwalk in the center of the dance floor.

“Listening to Family Force 5 is like lighting a cluster of firecrackers in your mouth,” offers guitarist Derek Mount (known to fans as Chap Stique), recommending a spin of Dance Or Die over that daredevil antic. “This album provides a connection and an escape, and it's guaranteed to make your booty shake and your head bang. It's greasy, slimy and soupy, yet still very slick and shiny at the same time.”

Indeed, the disc is replete with rippling rhythms, assaulting electronics and a raucous rock ‘n roll underpinning, but beyond these sonic elements, there’s also an all-encompassing futuristic vibe. From the sci-fi synth textures of “Fever” to the thrash-tinged robotic rocker “Radiator” to the ultra contagious title track, consider this project to be the musical version of Mad Max meets 2001: A Space Odyssey.

“The last record was a straight-up party, but we always said the second would be sweaty rock n’ roll music,” stresses front-man/guitarist Solomon Olds (Soul Glow Activatur), who co-produced the project with Joe Baldridge (Beck, Jewel). “The album title and imagery transport the listener into a dire life-or-death situation. Each song unites that urgency with a danceable beat, so get to steppin,' or you'll be extinct.”

Fans will have to fight to survive during the band’s live show, an unrelenting rush of delightfully uncontainable madness that has become Family Force 5’s bread and butter. “We encourage fans to dress up in costumes, whether it be a killer whale, a big chicken or a Skeletor outfit,“ urges Chap Stique. “Family Force 5 realizes that most people think rock n’ roll is about trying to be cool, but to us, there’s nothing cooler than when people let go and end up stealing the show by break dancing in helmets or body-slamming each other in Lucha Libre masks.”

Placing their lives and relationships at risk, the members have committed themselves to an arduous touring schedule, averaging 250 to 300 days on the road per year. The band is in the midst of a full-fledged summer run on the Vans Warped Tour, and will follow with a solo headlining trek, both equipped to supersede any prior concert experiences. In addition to members thrashing the stage wearing matching futuristic spacesuits, expect to see the Family Force 5000, a massive drum machine they personally invented that, at first glance, looks more like the next NASA launch computer than it does a musical instrument.

“It is the only fully-functional giant drum machine in the universe. It's a six-and-a-half-foot tall, 760-pound juggernaut of pads, knobs, and switches that inhales electricity and exhales lightning,” announces Soul Glow Activatur. “The Family Force 5000 started as a joke three years ago. Then we mentioned it to a friend, who happens to be a wizard in electronics, and he was able to bring our sci-fi idea to life. The fact that we have a huge, light-up, chunky machine on stage is pretty cool, and it adds to the robotic rock element of this season.”

Outside of their industrial explorations, members continue offering fans content in a variety of entertainment mediums as an additional means of appreciation for listeners’ unwavering support. Take, for instance, the steady stream of audio blogs, recently issued as the iTunes compilation Blingin’ Blogs Volume 1 (which finds the players offering a series of ghetto shout-outs and poking fun at pirates, to name a few). There’s also the ever-expanding online collection of The Really Real Show, a Spinal Tap-esque video library of stories from the road, spanning a broad comedic spectrum from bus brawls to single men's support groups.

Even with all the joyous insanity stemming from Family Force 5’s camp during the two years between projects (which also included first place in Yahoo’s “Who’s Next?,” several Energizer-sponsored extended slots on last summer’s Warped outing and countless reader’s choice awards), the eclectic quintet also persevered and endured through many adversities. Amidst tough financial times, the toil of the road, and label limbo, the band's grassroots fan base and determined work ethic fueled its highly storied course.

What’s the name of your band? What’s the origin of that name? Have you changed the band’s name before?

We call ourselves the Promise Hero. The name was donated from a close friend of the band while we were stumped on a name. we've never changed it because we couldn't think of anything else!

How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

I've know Bobby since I was 15 and he was 16, 6 years ago. We met our drummer Frank a year after that when he was only 14 (14!). He was awesome at drums then, too. I finally met Jeff when he and I worked at Guitar center together 3 1/2 years ago.

When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?

Since I've been playing in bands with Bobby since I was 15, I'd say that's a good place to say we started, even though the Promise Hero didn't technically form until about 3 years after that. I thought Bobby was a really great singer and songwriter and that he was very charming, that inspired me to make music with him.

What can you tell me about your instruments? Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with whatever’s available? What made you choose the instruments you have now? Was it cost or was it a style/model/brand/color preference?

We've all saved up to buy professional instruments, and I've got certain preferences in the way I set up my guitar that is hard to compromise on. I think we all bought the instruments we have for their model and brand, but at that point you can pretty much pick any cool color or style you would prefer.

Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

We've performed all over the US, and our favorite place is certainly our home base of the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. We've always got upcoming shows!

Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list?

We play most of the songs off of our newest album. We never have played a cover before, but there are always ones I'd like to try. The trick is to not bastardize any 'sacred' or loved pop songs.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?

Me and Bobby write all the songs, sometimes together or sometimes individually. The songs are normally about relationships, or introspection. I can't imagine they'll change for the most part.

Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

Bobby or myself will write a song, then we'll demo it at my house and send the mp3 file to the guys to learn. Then we'll get together during practice and collaborate on it.

What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?

We usually practice before shows, but not a set time that we do consistently. We haven't even been practicing all that much lately. We've gotten to a point where we play together pretty well together.

How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?

We used to write songs based on influences, whereas now our influence is just to write good songs, if that makes sense.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?


The biggest challenge is working hard to take the band in a direction that will bring us success. We've overcome certain aspects of it, but there are always other hurdles. It is hard, but rewarding work!

What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?

Fortune seems to be an unlikely goal in any endeavor anymore, and always shallow. I would like us to be able to successfully tour.

What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Do it because you have to do it, not because it's a cool thing to do.

Callisto is a post-metal band from Turku, Finland. The band was formed in 2001 in Kokkola. Whilst their early works are HC/metalcore, their first album True Nature Unfolds has a strong sludge metal and doom influence and their second album Noir is more influenced by progressive and more dynamic sound. Apart from featuring female vocals on some songs, they have used unexpected instruments, for example saxophone, cello, flute and English horn. Callisto - Providence

Words will easily fail when one attempts to come up with a comprehensive description of the sonic worlds created by the Turku-based sextet Callisto, as no language can adequately convey the feelings of pathos and elegance this music evokes. Their sound is deeply rooted in the somewhat somber atmosphere so characteristic of the northern landscape they inhabit, but instead of toying with suicidal themes they seek the beauty in melancholy, and manage to make it sound strangely uplifting.

Callisto began their musical exploration in 2001 inspired by such ’post-hardcore’ bands as Neurosis and Breach. In mere eight years they have progressed far past any genre boundaries, from the godly racket of their early days and their first album True Nature Unfolds to the dark cinematic sophistication of Noir and ultimately to their adventurous masterpiece Providence, set to be released in spring 2009.

Not willing to stagnate and release a similar sounding record after record after record, Callisto have taken a bold creative step away from their earlier, more instrumental material and composed a vocal record. The songs on Providence is built upon layers of melodies, but this is far from pop music, this is progressive music in its truest form. The band colours their aural approach with mellotrons, prog rock overtones, some jazzy bits and other stylish influences drawn from the seventies, and wrap everything up with vocals that range from screams of anguish to solemn melodies and beyond.

Those with a fondness of Neurosis and their ilk will still find a lot to digest in these majestic compositions, and also those into progressive heavyweights such as King Crimson and Opeth are in for a real treat. Providence was produced, engineered and mixed by Jonas Olsson and mastered by Svante Forsbäck. The artwork is contributed by Martin Kvamme of Unit Delta Plus (Fantomas, Satyricon, Turbonegro). The album will be available on CD by Fullsteam Records and on limited double vinyl by Svart Records.

Awake? will sound immediately familiar to anyone who has followed Zao’s convoluted, controversial and altogether exciting career, with its signature all-out heaviness and beautifully simple memorability. Awake? stands easily beside the best and brightest of the Zao catalog, with the kind of production (courtesy of guitarist Scott Mellinger himself together with As I Lay Dying vocalist Tim Lambesis and Daniel Castleman) that Zao has always deserved.

Thunderous, epic, and full of passion, Zao (Greek for “alive”) is driven by vocals that exorcise singer Daniel Weyandt’s demons as if his life depended on the songs. His words reshape a personal history wrought with tragedy, suicide and death into beautiful musings that connected with their brutal honesty and naked self-observation. Mellinger, the band’s primary songwriter, adds melodic vocals as well.

Zao’s storied career was documented on the two-disc The Lesser Lights Of Heaven DVD and the luminaries of today’s heavy music scene are well aware of their debt to the band. Underoath and Unearth opened for Zao. Thrice, As I Lay Dying and Demon Hunter love Zao. Matt Heafy from Trivium joined the band onstage during a tour together.

Zao’s hometown of Greensburg, Pennsylvania isn’t known for many things besides being in close proximity to the mall where George A. Romero filmed Dawn Of The Dead. And that isolation has allowed the band to steer clear of trends.

Zao’s original incarnation formed in the mid-90s with evangelical zeal. When that version of the band fell apart, Zao as it would come to change the course of heavy music was born. Recently hailed by Alternative Press as “one of the most important albums of 1998, Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest took the conventions of hardcore and heavy metal and turned them upside down.

When Scott Mellinger joined Zao for the following year’s Liberate te ex Inferis, it began a song-writing partnership with Weyandt that persists to this day. Self-Titled was written and recorded by Dan, Scott and Jesse Smith (the only remaining holdover from the pre-Blood&Fire days) and featured a vast amount of experimentation with electronics, dark soundscapes, and melodic interludes. “Five Year Winter” continues to be one of Zao’s most popular songs in the live setting. The trio created Parade Of Chaos together as well, pushing the envelope even further.

Zao’s first album for Ferret Music, The Funeral of God, was recorded as a five-piece with producer Eric Rachel (Atreyu, Every Time I Die). The album became Zao’s biggest selling record and saw them receive their first airplay on MTV2 and Fuse and major press accolades.

After tours with bands like Bleeding Through and Dillinger Escape Plan, the band – now Dan, Scott, Marty Lunn (bass) and Jeff Gretz (drums) – recorded The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here with Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Neurosis) manning the reel-to-reel. Next they hit the road with In Flames, Trivium, Demon Hunter & Throwdown.

Dan, Scott, Marty and Jeff reconvened for Awake?, their first album of new material in three years. Under the influence of great American songwriters, countless punk rock shows, pop music and folk musical legends, Mike Herrera's Tumbledown was born. Forged from Herrera’s experiences on tour – miles and miles of landscape, experience, and the lonely open road, Tumbledown encompasses the love and heartbreak that comes with a life spent on the move, away from home in Bremerton, WA. While the world-traveling musician may be most well-known as the dynamic bassist and lead singer of the Left Coast three-piece MxPx, beneath all the tattoos and piercings, the ranting and stage-wrecking, Herrera has long been an acoustic wielding songsmith. His alt/country/pop-punk-a-billy solo project Tumbledown is at the root and on the flipside of all that (distinctive) punk rock.

“It's all about the songs,” Herrera says. “What it sounds like depends on who you are.”

The music carries an old-school country-western swagger, reminiscent of Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, with Herrera strumming a big dreadnaught acoustic over a chugging snare drum and stand-up bass. Mean Everything To Nothing (2009)

Mean Everything To Nothing , the second album from Atlanta's Manchester Orchestra, is everything you want a rock record to be: raw, urgent, emotional, and 100 percent authentic. "There is nothing fake about this record," says frontman and lyricist Andy Hull. "There's not one fake sound on it. We recorded it live because we wanted it to sound like a band, and I think it does: live and loud!"

Inspired by the pounding, primal assault of Weezer's Pinkerton , Nirvana's In Utero , and Foo Fighters' The Colour and the Shape , this young band has created its own version of what a classic rock album should sound like, complete with fiercely beautiful melodies, shifting guitar and keyboard textures, loud/soft dynamics, and an urgency in each band member's performance, especially Hull's cathartic vocals.

The drama is magnified by the fact that the album's first six songs bleed into one another without stopping. The blistering opener "The Only One" immediately gives way to the propulsive "Shake It Out" and the torrential first single "I've Got Friends," followed by the anguished "Pride" and the menacing "In My Teeth," before slowing down on the darkly funny "100 Dollars." Then the album pauses and down-shifts into less relentless yet equally gripping territory on songs from "I Can Feel A Hot One" (which was featured on Gossip Girl last September), to the ruminative closer "The River."

The breakneck pace is both exhilarating and exhausting, which Hull says was intentional. "I like the fact that there isn't a chance during the first six songs to say anything if you're listening to it with somebody. It's seamless. We did that to emphasize that there are two halves to the album." The first half is a brooding tale of teenage angst and anger -- the confusion and disillusionment of growing up and becoming an adult. The second half is about redemption and an overall re-evaluation of the self. It's about Hull beginning to realize in his own words "that things are not ok, I am not ok, and there's a beauty in that -- a calming, a forgiveness," he says.

A fully realized album, Mean Everything To Nothing is the sound of a band coming into its own after spending 300 days on the road in support of their debut album, 2007's I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child -- a coming-of-age chronicle that expressed the then 19-year-old Hull's hopes and aspirations as he sought spiritual knowledge. Virgin was an attention-getting shot across the bow that Rolling Stone praised as "expansive in scope and rich in texture, even while remaining lyrically focused on small moments of revelation" and the New York Times called "music to swoon to." But whereas the songs on the debut were voiced by a fictional cast of characters that Hull created to obscure his own emotions, the intensely personal songs on Mean Everything To Nothing are all him. "I was able to be more honest when singing as someone else," admits Hull, who is now 22. "Now I've realized, although it's incredibly difficult, it's more powerful to just say it myself."

Although Hull writes all the lyrics, he describes the process of making Mean Everything to Nothing as more collaborative than that of its predecessor. "Writing the album was such a joy for me because the things these guys contributed were insane," Hull says. "I had plenty of suggestions and opinions, but the parts are theirs. This was not a one-man show. Jeremiah is patient and wise; he'd make me play a song five times before jumping in during our writing rehearsals. Robert's talent and creativity are obvious throughout the album. His vocals, keys, and guitar parts shine in moments where you don't expect them to. Jonathan has always been an amazing bassist, but on this album he let go with more freedom in writing his parts than he has before. And Chris doesn't really play keys, it's more like lead guitar. Most of the moments that sound like a crazy guitar are actually keyboard. He really made the record his own by writing ambient swells, piercing tones, and adding chunky, beefy distortion."

Indeed the band's chemistry is palpable on Mean Everything To Nothing , perhaps because, after more than a year of touring with such artists as Kings of Leon, Brand New, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Say Anything, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, as well as performing their own headlining shows, Manchester Orchestra has become a powerful and well-oiled machine. "The touring made us so incredibly tight on all levels," Hull says, "so there was no pride involved if someone said, 'No that doesn't work, don't do that.' No one got their feelings hurt because we were all dedicated to the same thing -- making the best record we could."

The band were supported in the process by their producers, studio vet Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, My Morning Jacket, The Raconteurs) in conjunction with longtime friend and producer Dan Hannon and the band. "Joe is the absolute tone master," Hull says. "The sounds he gets are so good. We wrote these songs so quickly and he was great in helping us do surgery to make them better. When Dan came in, it was like fresh blood pumping through the project. He'd move five knobs and click a few things and it was like, 'Oh shit, that's great.' The whole thing was a great collaboration."

Recorded last fall in Nashville and Atlanta, the album was made on the heels of a very active period for the band. In 2008, they played several major U.S. festivals, including Coachella and Lollapalooza, and released a five-song EP, Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind , in October. Included with the EP is a DVD of the previously unreleased What's Left Behind documentary film of the band directed by Sam Erickson (My Morning Jacket's Okonokos ). In addition, Hull released The Eventually Home -- the second installment of his epic solo project Right Away, Great Captain , which tells the ongoing saga of a 17 th -century sailor who catches his wife in an act of betrayal with his own brother. All of Hull's and Manchester Orchestra's output is released on Favorite Gentleman Recordings, the indie label Hull and Edmond founded in 2004 as a way to stay in control of their music and to pass along the good fortune of their own success by signing other artists, like Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Kevin Devine.

"It's all been great," Hull says, "but I'd have to say the best thing about the past year has been developing the brotherhood the five of us have. This band has been through hard times and come out stronger than ever before. That's what makes it worth it."

What’s the difference between FM Static and Thousand Foot Krutch? Singer-songwriter Trevor McNevan and drummer Steve Augustine lead both bands, but the former is a side project to the latter. In fact, the public has shown center-stage love for each act’s efforts, from FM Static’s summery punk-pop to TFK’s more autumnal, metallic rock.

More than anything, having two names makes it easier to take some fun creative chances. Like pursuing the idea for a concept album where every lyric is the innermost thought of a soul-searching teenager. When that spark of inspiration entered Trevor’s head last year while TFK was on tour with Skillet, he knew Dear Diary was a perfect job for FM Static.

It all begins with a couple of self-explanatorily-titled rock tunes. “Boy Moves to a New Town with Optimistic Outlook” introduces the never-named star who hopes to find something or someone worth living for. Over a punk tempo and pop melody he wonders: What will we leave behind but the pages of our life? “The Unavoidable Battle of Feeling on the Outside” drills into the psyche with a simple guitar riff and his simple social truth: I’m not an idiot, but I feel like one a lot.

That feeling aside, “Boy Meets Girl (and Vice Versa)” finds the main character making a crucial new friend. He refers to her as “E.T.” in writing (extended entries for each song are printed inside the Dear Diary packaging). That’s because she was like no one I had ever met. Her purpose seemed to glow, like she was plugged in. Soon, he’s thinking more about what life means and feeling less alone on the anthemic “Sometimes You Can Forget Who You Are.” In the Weezer-like stomp, “Man Whatcha Doin?” the boy meets a homeless philosopher who helps straighten out his thoughts about money and happiness. It’s a well-placed moment of fun just before the album’s concept goes much deeper.

“The Voyage of Beliefs” is Dear Diary’s crossroads, a gripping indie rock duet between McNevan and Superchick’s Tricia Brock where the characters both step up in faith, proclaiming a belief in God that is their own, not just the one their families have handed down. And, oh, how they need it for what happens next.

Up to this point, FM Static’s Dear Diary would already be unique enough for its concept and catchiness, but the next arc of songs turns the album into something truly remarkable. Without warning, the girl’s dad kills himself, an event that leaves our boy asking why everyone we love still lets us down in the cinematic quietness of “Her Father’s Song.”

Not surprisingly, E.T. suffers a crisis of faith and later moves away. Although the boy tries to shake off his new beliefs as well amidst his devastation, he feels this strange, warm feeling come over me . . . a simple peace letting me know I was okay that fuels the message of Dear Diary’s first single, “Take Me As I Am.” A poignant, piano-driven dénouement, this revelation that faith can still grow even amidst struggle will resound to all ages. Those same determined emotions extend to the boy’s “Dear God” letter following the girl’s departure. To its credit, FM Static conjures in these two songs a timeless, trend-immune pop sound that stretches McNevan and Augustine in their top-notch performances beyond anything they have previously recorded.

True to its resilient teenage characters, Dear Diary ends on a celebratory high note. The accompanying story written by McNevan explains how the “Dear God” letter was answered: the boy and E.T. end up attending the same university and maturing in their beliefs together. They don’t have all the answers, but they have a purpose, and they still know how to have fun. Album closer “The Shindig (Off to College)” is a steam-blower full of sing-along pop culture references and youthful wisdom: Tonight may not be the best night that we’ve ever had. But it may be the best time ever to realize what we have.

Those needing something better found just that where they first encountered the Philly-based group, whether on a disc or in a sweaty venue. Oh wake up, sleepers.

Fans have long anticipated the fourth wake-up call from mewithoutYou—it’s all crazy! it’s all false! it’s all a dream! it’s alright. Following the expansive Brother, Sister, the album is another daring adventure charted by frontman Aaron Weiss, guitarist Michael Weiss, bassist Greg Jehanian, and drummer Rickie Mazzotta. Helping to further stretch the group’s boundaries is the production duo of indie dynamo Daniel Smith (Danielson Familie) and Philly workhorse Brian McTear (Mazarin, Matt Pond PA).

Anyone familiar with [A -> B Life] and the sophomore Catch for Us the Foxes knows the band’s intensity rests largely on the anguished wondering of Weiss’s lyrics. There have always been more questions than answers (“How can this great love be inside of me?” “What new mystery is this?”). This latest offering begins where Brother, Sister left off, with a series of meditations on forgiveness, love, death, and the illusions of self—all set to indelible melodies, lush compositions, and rousing choruses.

“O, Porcupine,” a standout track on Brother, Sister, asked us to listen to creation’s groans. Well, there’s plenty of that groaning on this album, together with all the cawing, chattering, and warbling by an allegorical cast of foxes, crows, bunnies, sheep, donkeys, and over a dozen other animals. Even the vegetables have something profound to say in this imaginative world.

Other surprises abound. Much of the mewithoutYou anguish of old has given way to a sense of gentle wonder, as on the celebratory “Timothy Hay” and “A Stick a Carrot and a String.” Jehanian, Mazzotta, Mike Weiss, and a whole slew of guest musicians have unearthed strange and beautiful sounds that accompany the album’s many marvels. That’s not to say that this album is afraid of the dark. “The Angel of Death Came to David’s Room” is a stark treatise about where we’re all headed, and “The King Beetle on a Coconut Estate” recounts an old fable about the blistering fate that awaits the fearless truth-seeker. It’s hard not to get chills when band and full orchestra reach the song’s devastating finale.

Recognizing how well the group eludes neat genre labels, mtvU awarded mewithoutYou the Left-Field Woodie in 2005 (picking them out from an illustrious pack that included the Arcade Fire and M.I.A.). Four years later, the band remains in left field, but one that continuously draws to them more eccentrics, seekers, and lovers of original music. “It’s all crazy,” Aaron sings on the closing “Allah, Allah, Allah,” (sure to be the New Anthem, as fans at recent shows already know).
